Our Ringwood
Heritage
The history of Ringwood is filled with delightful stories of hope, achievement and fulfillment
Our History
Borough of Ringwood
In December 1924, the South-West Riding of the Shire of Lilydale broke away and became the Borough of Ringwood.
Even though Ringwood had been named – after its English counterpart – in the early 1850s, it took more than 70 years before it had its own local adiministration.
Fruit-Growing
Ringwood has had a rich past in growing all sorts of fruit, flowers and berries.
Many immigrants came to the area, particularly from the Armagh County of Ireland, the former German State of Prussia and South-West England. All predominant agricultural areas.
Mining
In the era 1869 until the end of the land boom in 1889, Ringwood was a prominent centre for gold and antimony mining, then bricks, tiles and insulators.
“The Ringwood area has been a rich tapestry of heritage and historical activities.”
